Iran is promoting a plan tied to the Strait of Hormuz that could generate billions of dollars in annual revenue, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing people involved in the effort. The proposal would charge for security, safety and environmental services in the strait, with estimated income of $40 billion a year for the countries involved.
If implemented, the idea would give Tehran a cash flow and leverage it did not have before the war. Iranian officials say the plan is being presented across the wider Middle East and even in Beijing as Tehran seeks support.
According to those officials, Iran wants its Persian Gulf neighbors to join the agreement and share in the proceeds. The reporting does not say when the plan might be adopted or whether any country has agreed to it.
