Switzerland beat host Canada 2-1 in Vancouver on Wednesday, clinching first place in Group B at the 2026 World Cup and sending Canada into second. The result ended Canada’s hope of continuing to play on home soil in the next round and means Jesse Marsch’s team will travel to the United States for its historic Round of 32 appearance.
Switzerland joined Mexico, the United States, Germany and Argentina, all of whom have already secured first place in their groups. Five teams, Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan and Panama, have already been eliminated and will leave after the group stage.
A number of decisions remain to be made in the final round of matches, which continues overnight at 01:00 on Sport1. The battle is not only for first and second place, but also for third, because under the expanded 48-team format, eight of the 12 third-place finishers advance.
The current projected Round of 32 bracket includes Germany vs Paraguay, France vs Sweden, South Korea vs Canada, Netherlands vs Morocco, Portugal vs Ghana, Spain vs Austria, United States vs Algeria, Egypt vs Czech Republic, Brazil vs Japan, Ivory Coast vs Norway, Mexico vs Scotland, England vs Cape Verde, Argentina vs Uruguay, Australia vs Iran, Switzerland vs Belgium and Colombia vs Croatia. The Round of 32 begins Sunday in Inglewood, California, with the match between the runners-up from Groups A and B, currently South Korea and Canada.
