The progressive left in New York, led by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, notched a sweeping victory in the city’s Democratic primaries, with anti-Israel candidates defeating establishment figures. The results marked a strong showing for candidates aligned with the movement’s pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel positions.
In the 10th District, Brad Lander ousted Rep. Dan Goldman. Lander said he would cut off all military aid to what he called Israel, the “apartheid state.” In the 13th District, Columbia University protest encampment leader Darializa Avila Chevalier narrowly defeated veteran Rep. Adriano Espaillat in a close race.
Not all establishment figures were defeated. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli kept his post despite calls from the left to boycott investments he had led in Israel. In upstate New York, President Donald Trump also recorded a primary win, after his candidate, businessman Anthony Constantino, prevailed in the Republican contest.
