Brad Lander, the former New York City comptroller and a former member of Democratic Socialists of America, defeated Rep. Dan Goldman on Tuesday in the Democratic primary for New York's 10th Congressional District. Lander, who describes himself as a "liberal Zionist" and is openly pro-Israel, beat Goldman in a direct contest in one of the most Democratic districts in the United States.
The district covers lower Manhattan and parts of western Brooklyn, including Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope and Sunset Park. The result was seen as a notable win for the city’s growing progressive wing, especially because Lander was backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Goldman is a former federal prosecutor who served as chief counsel in Donald Trump’s first impeachment. He was first elected to Congress in 2022 after winning a very close primary in the redrawn district, which had been reshaped by changes to district boundaries.
