Florida Jewish Community Mobilizes to Block Anti-Israel Candidate in Democratic Primary

Ephraim Goldberg, the rabbi of a large Orthodox synagogue in Boca Raton, Florida, has urged his congregants to register as Democrats to prevent an anti-Israel candidate from winning the upcoming Democratic primary. Goldberg's call aims to support incumbent Congressman Jared Moskowitz, who faces a serious challenge from Oliver Larkin, a candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America and known for his harsh criticism of Israel. Larkin has accused Israel of "genocide," called for an immediate halt to U.S. military aid, and supported the Palestinian right of return, while associating with figures accused of antisemitism.

The congressional district in question, redrawn to favor Republicans, is a key battleground in the upcoming midterm elections and includes one of the largest Jewish voter populations in the U.S. Goldberg, who usually leans Republican but respects pro-Israel Democrats like Moskowitz, emphasized the importance of participating in the Democratic primary to block Larkin. He encouraged voters to follow their conscience in the general election.

Goldberg reported overwhelmingly positive responses from his community of over 1,000 families, mostly conservative, who understand the stakes involved. Opposition to his initiative comes from two groups: those wanting to preserve their Republican primary voting rights, especially given a Republican gubernatorial candidate with openly antisemitic views, and those uncomfortable with registering as Democrats on emotional grounds. Goldberg acknowledged the strategic concerns but stressed that emotional resistance risks missing a critical opportunity to influence the race.
