A hiker in California ended up needing a multi-agency rescue after trying to retrieve his sunglasses from a campground vault toilet and falling in himself. The unusual incident happened on Saturday shortly before 2:30 p.m. local time at Camp Edison near Shaver Lake in central California, about 80 kilometers northeast of Fresno.
According to U.S. reports, the man, whose identity was not released, was using a waterless vault toilet when his sunglasses dropped into the waste container below the seat. He tried to reach them, lost his balance, and fell into the toilet tank area, where he was trapped in the tight space beneath the structure for 10 to 15 minutes until rescuers got him out.
The Fresno County Sheriff's Office said the call came through a Spanish interpreter reporting that a person had fallen into the toilet holding tank. Law enforcement, firefighters, campground staff and Cal Fire crews all responded. Sergeant Chris Tullous said the teams safely removed the man, gave him an initial decontamination, and confirmed he was in good condition. He was not seriously hurt, but he did need a thorough washing, with local reports saying firefighters had to spray him down with water before he could continue on his way.
Camp Edison is a long-running campground on the western shore of Shaver Lake, built in the 1960s, with hundreds of sites, electrical hookups and recreation areas. The article notes that this was not the first rescue triggered by an item falling into a toilet, citing a 2023 case in Michigan involving an Apple Watch and another in Australia where a tourist was trapped for hours after a toilet floor collapsed.
