A camper in California fell into a pit-style toilet at a camping site after trying to recover a pair of sunglasses that had dropped into the waste container. The incident happened on Saturday at a campground at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Authorities said the sunglasses fell into a waterless, non-flushing toilet, and the man then fell into the chemical holding tank beneath the stall. A source familiar with the case told UC Valley News that, through a Spanish interpreter, responders were informed that the man had gone into the chemical storage tank. Language barriers initially complicated the emergency response.
Firefighters, campground staff, and law enforcement rescued him after about 10 to 15 minutes. He was treated at the scene, was not seriously injured, and underwent what authorities described as a hose rinse before walking away on his own.
It remains unclear whether the sunglasses were recovered. A sheriff’s spokesperson told The Los Angeles Times that investigators believe the glasses were likely “lost in the pit” and remained in the waste chemicals.
