A camper in California fell into a pit toilet at a campsite after trying to recover a pair of sunglasses that had dropped into the waste container. The incident happened on Saturday at a camping area at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
According to authorities, the sunglasses fell into a waterless, non-flushing toilet, and the man then dropped into the chemical holding tank beneath the stall. A source familiar with the case told Y Central Valley that, through a Spanish interpreter, officials said the person had fallen into the chemical storage tank. The language barrier initially complicated the response for emergency crews.
Firefighters, campsite staff, and law enforcement rescued the man after about 10 to 15 minutes. He was treated at the scene, was not seriously hurt, and underwent what authorities described as a hose rinse before walking away on his own.
It was not clear whether the sunglasses were recovered. A sheriff's spokesperson told The Los Angeles Times that they believe the glasses were "lost in the hole" and remained in the waste chemicals.
