An Israeli plumber, Yaniv Hayon, who intervened to stop an attacker on a FlyDubai flight, has gained unexpected international attention, particularly in the United States. The New York Post featured his story, highlighting the public's fascination not just with his bravery but also with his profession. Photos of Hayon with bloodstains on his shirt after the emergency landing further fueled the narrative.
The incident sparked a social media buzz, with some American women telling the New York Post that Hayon's actions made the plumbing profession surprisingly attractive. Haya Lev, a 52-year-old TV presenter living in Israel, stated that Hayon's willingness to act in a dangerous situation, rather than his job, is what she finds appealing.
The New York Post reportedly played on Hayon's profession with jokes and even suggested creating a dating app themed around plumbing tools. The story also resonated with Israelis, including culinary expert Rami Tal, who joked about changing his profession or updating his online profile due to the newfound attention on plumbers.
Sivan Hadari, founder of the women's community Her Tel Aviv, linked Hayon's popularity to his readiness to act, a trait she associated with many Israelis, possibly due to military service which fosters heightened vigilance. Even U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the situation, reportedly expressing admiration for Hayon in a TikTok video.
