Netanyahu Invites Indian PM and Flydubai Pilot to Light Independence Day Torch

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Flydubai the Flydubai Pilot to light a ceremonial torch at Israel's upcoming Independence Day ceremony. Netanyahu extended the invitation during a video call with the Flydubai Pilot, who recently saved passengers after his co-pilot attacked him, causing the Tel Aviv-bound flight to enter a steep dive. Netanyahu praised the Flydubai Pilot as a "true hero" for both the Indian and Israeli people, and for the world, commending his "courage and ability to remain calm and act properly in impossible circumstances." He noted that while the honor is typically reserved for Israeli citizens, Israelis would welcome the Flydubai Pilot's participation. "You saved the situation. You saved many lives," Netanyahu told the pilot, wishing him a full recovery and expressing hope for a "historic and unforgettable visit" to Israel soon.

During the call, the Flydubai Pilot recounted the attack in the cockpit, explaining that he initially thought the plane was damaged when he was struck from behind. He realized he was being attacked when the blows continued. The Flydubai Pilot described how his vision was severely impaired and the plane was descending rapidly. He managed to open the cockpit door once, but the attacker re-closed it. Lying on the floor, the Flydubai Pilot heard air rushing in and shouts. "I had one last burst of energy to resist; I told myself, if I don't do this, I will die." He then pushed himself towards the door, grabbed the handle, and opened it, allowing those outside to intervene.
