The story in 5 lines · by baba

  • Simchat Torah celebrations were held globally, marking three years since the October 7th massacre.
  • Hasidic courts and yeshivas across Israel held large, fervent celebrations with prayers and Hakafot.
  • Several communities reported miracles, including a near-miss with a collapsing Sukkah and a flight from Dubai.
  • Special prayers were offered for the victims of the massacre and for divine protection.
  • Survivors of the Nova festival participated in holiday events and a commemoration ceremony.

Jews worldwide and the Torah and yeshiva world celebrated the Simchat Torah holiday with great fervor in synagogues across Israel. This year's celebration marked three years since the "terrible massacre" in the south, with many communities dedicating prayer circuits in memory of the victims. Thanksgiving prayers were also offered for a "great miracle" that occurred on a flight from Dubai to Israel.

In the Gur Hasidic court, the Rebbe participated in all prayers and Hakafot (circuit dances with Torah scrolls), including secondary Hakafot, after a less active Sukkot intermediate period. The prayers concluded late, and thousands of followers danced before the Rebbe for extended periods. Knesset Member Yitzchak Goldknopf served as the chazzan for the Hakafot, as in previous years.

The Vizhnitz Rebbe led a deeply emotional gathering on Hoshana Rabbah, speaking with tears about his longing for his grandfather, the "Amri Chaim." He also participated in all Simchat Torah prayers and Hakafot, concluding with a large gathering on the holiday's final evening.

In the Boyan Hasidic court, a unique ceremony occurred during the farewell from the Sukkah, where the Rebbe led the congregation in reciting Psalms. A significant innovation during the Hakafot was the participation of the Rebbe's eldest son, Rabbi Yosef Breuer, alongside the Rebbe, instead of the usual chazzan. The Rebbe danced with exceptional vigor.

At the Tolded Abraham Yitzchak Hasidic court, a congregant presented the Rebbe with a miniature Torah scroll, allowing for easier dancing during Simchat Torah. Influencer Rabbi Elimelech Biderman led prayers at the Skverer synagogue in Bnei Brak.

A significant miracle occurred at the Botshan Hasidic court when a large tree branch fell from a nearby building, causing a partial collapse of the Sukkah shortly after a gathering. A scholar present in the Sukkah at the time miraculously escaped unharmed and later recited the blessing of "Hagomel" in thanks.

Leading Halachic Authority Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch stayed at his yeshiva in Beit Shemesh, using an exceptionally small Torah scroll previously created for Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky. During Hoshana Rabbah, Rabbi Sternbuch prayed fervently for the cancellation of harsh decrees.

Rabbi M. Tz. Bergman led prayers at his yeshiva in Bnei Brak, participating in the Hakafot and reciting the first verse of "Ata Har'eita." Rabbi M. H. Hirsch also held Hakafot with a small Torah scroll.

Yeshivas Slabodka and Mir Jerusalem held large Hakafot celebrations, with thousands of students and congregants participating. At Mir, Rabbi Yitzchak Ezrachi, despite his advanced age, encouraged the children and students. The yeshiva also began its winter study session with Tractate Bava Batra.

At the Ateret Shlomo yeshiva in Rishon LeZion, thousands of students attended the concluding ceremonies. Rabbi Michael Zilber led a ceremony of completing the entire Torah on the eve of Simchat Torah, a practice previously observed by Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky.

Rabbi Shimon Kanievsky led prayers at Kiryat Melech Yeshiva, explaining his custom of using High Holiday melodies for Simchat Torah prayers as it is a day of judgment for water. The yeshiva's Hakafot involved specific assignments for heads of the yeshiva as "Chatan Torah" and "Chatan Bereshit."

In Ashdod, heavy rain caused electrical shorts, leading to high demand for non-Jews to fix the power, with each receiving 50 shekels. At the "Noam El" synagogue in Beit Vagan, a "Shalom Zachar" event was held, and Hakafot auctions fetched significant sums, including 8,000 shekels for a "rain opening."

Survivors of the Nova music festival, along with families of hostages and heroes of the recent conflict, spent Simchat Torah with the "Kesher Yehudi" organization, participating in a ceremony to commemorate the victims of the October 7th attacks.
