  • Children called police on Oct 7 reporting their parents' deaths.
  • The children were aged six and nine and in Kfar Aza.
  • Their father, photographer Roee Idan, was killed in the attack.
  • His wife was murdered; two older children survived hiding.
  • Youngest daughter Abigail was abducted and later released.

The October 7th War Crimes Investigation Unit released a distressing phone call made by the children of photographer Roee Idan to police dispatch on October 7. The two children, aged six and nine, informed the dispatcher that their parents had died. When asked when this occurred, they responded, "Now." The children identified themselves as belonging to the Idan family and stated they were in Kfar Aza.

During the call, the dispatcher attempted to ascertain the situation, asking if anyone had entered their home or if a rocket had fallen. The children explained their father was outside with them and they had fled into the house. The dispatcher instructed them to enter a safe room, stay inside, and not leave, to which the children confirmed they were in the safe room.

Roee Idan, 42, a photographer for Ynet and Yediot Ahronot, was a resident of Kibbutz Kfar Aza. At the start of the October 7th attacks, he left his home to document Hamas terrorists infiltrating via paragliders, transmitting the images to his newsroom. He later returned home, where his wife Smadar and their three children were. Smadar was murdered in their home. Their two older children, Michael and Amalia, survived by hiding in a closet for approximately 14 hours. Roee was killed while holding his youngest daughter, Abigail, who was abducted to Gaza and later released after 51 days of captivity.
