A 47-year-old teacher from Jenin was caught last week working illegally at a business in Beit She'an, and prosecutors filed an indictment against him on Monday for illegal presence in Israel. Police also ordered the business shut for 21 days after the case came to light during a patrol in the city.
Officers spotted a man carrying out demolition work at the site and stopped to check his status. The investigation found that he was a schoolteacher from the West Bank who told police he had used his summer vacation to do renovation work.
After the inquiry ended, the prosecution unit submitted both the indictment and a request to keep the suspect in custody until the end of the proceedings. Northern District Commander Maj. Gen. Meir Eliyahu signed the administrative closure order for the business where he was employed.
At the same time, the employer, a 28-year-old resident of Basma, had his detention extended until June 24. Police say the investigation into suspicions of employing an illegal resident is still ongoing.
