Saudi Arabia Offered Warm Welcome to Israelis After Emergency Landing, Denied Military Jet Access

Saudi Arabian authorities provided a warm reception to 180 Israeli passengers who landed in the city of Tabuk following an emergency landing of a Flydubai flight. The passengers received food and medical treatment after their flight experienced an incident over Jordan, which was not directed at Saudi Arabia. Despite the humanitarian assistance, Saudi Arabia firmly refused to allow Israeli Air Force Hercules aircraft to land for a potential rescue operation. This refusal stemmed from concerns that the presence of Israeli military aircraft would be perceived as a step towards normalization, which could negatively impact Saudi public opinion. Israeli officials attempted to circumvent this by seeking permission for an unmarked Israeli plane, but this became unnecessary when the passengers agreed to board an Emirati rescue flight.

A senior Israeli official explained that the visual of an Israeli military plane landing would have been too public for Saudi Arabia's domestic audience. The official noted that the kingdom benefits from security ties with Israel without paying a political price, suggesting Israel should leverage this for diplomatic gain. The incident is seen as potentially strengthening relations between the two nations, building on Saudi Arabia's earlier approval for Flydubai flights over its territory to Israel since October 7.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, security ties with the "axis of resistance" continue to strengthen. Despite recent tensions arising from Saudi Arabia's pact with Turkey and Pakistan, the kingdom recently approached Israel via the U.S. Central Command requesting intelligence support in its fight against the Houthis. Israel is reported to have agreed to this request.
