Saudi Arabia Denies Israeli Rescue Flight, Citing Normalization Concerns

Saudi Arabia surprised Israeli officials by refusing to allow an Israeli plane to land and retrieve passengers from a Flydubai flight that made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Following the incident, Israeli authorities had requested permission from Riyadh to send either an El Al commercial flight or an Israeli Air Force plane to repatriate the stranded passengers. Israeli officials had been confident that Saudi Arabia would at least permit a civilian aircraft, even proposing a plane without any Israeli markings, but Riyadh rejected all such requests. The passengers were eventually able to return to Israel on a different Flydubai aircraft dispatched to Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi decision was particularly unexpected given the current context of improving relations between the two nations, driven partly by shared concerns over Iran and the Houthi rebels in Yemen. A source close to the Saudi royal family told i24NEWS, "Israel must understand that normalization cannot be imposed."

In parallel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Their discussion focused on the security of Israeli flights to the UAE and strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in light of the attempted hijacking of the Flydubai flight. The UAE has maintained its air link between Tel Aviv and Dubai for the past three years, even during periods of high security tension in Israel and the war with Iran, when many foreign airlines suspended services.
