National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir sent a letter Tuesday morning to Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Danny Levi after unusual incidents documented during last week’s protest on Highway 4 in Bnei Brak. In the letter, Ben Gvir said the footage, which reportedly shows police throwing stun grenades contrary to procedure, using excessive force against demonstrators and humiliating civilians, requires a thorough investigation and accountability for anyone who broke protocol.
Ben Gvir said he gives full backing to Israel Police officers who act “with courage and determination,” but added that there will be no tolerance for excessive violence or conduct that does not align with police values and the law. He said he is considering using his legal authority to permanently remove from the police officers and commanders involved in the incident if the inquiry confirms serious violations.
The minister specifically mentioned the possibility of dismissing the commander of the Bnei Brak, Ramat Gan station. He is expected to hold an urgent meeting on the matter with all relevant parties already this week before making a final decision.
Ben Gvir said, “My duty is to support officers who work for public safety, but also to act decisively when officers cross the line and hurt civilians. No one is above the law, and commanders will also be required to answer for their actions.”
