National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir sent a letter Monday morning to Police Commissioner Rafi Dan Levy demanding a full review of police conduct during the dispersal of a Jerusalem Faction protest on Highway 4. He called for harsh measures against anyone found to have acted against orders and procedures.
Ben Gvir said video footage from the scene appears to show police using stun grenades contrary to regulations, using excessive force against demonstrators, and humiliating civilians during the operation. He said the incidents require a thorough investigation and accountability for anyone who violated instructions.
While stressing that he gives full backing to police officers who maintain public order, Ben Gvir said there will be no tolerance for unlawful conduct or disproportionate force. In an especially unusual move, he said he is considering using his legal authority to permanently remove officers and commanders from the Israel Police if the review shows serious violations.
He specifically said that possibility is also being considered for Yoval Shavit, the commander of the Bnei Brak, Ramat Gan station, who has been at the center of criticism over the events. Ben Gvir’s statement followed sharp public outrage, especially in the ultra-Orthodox community, after footage circulated showing injured and bruised protesters. He said a special meeting with all relevant officials is expected this week, after which it will be decided whether to take disciplinary and personal action. Ben Gvir added, "My duty is to back police officers who work for public safety, but also to act decisively when officers deviate from the line and harm civilians. No one is above the law, and commanders will also be required to answer for their actions."
