Samsung's New SmartTag Tracker Now Works With iPhones
Samsung has unveiled its latest item tracker, the Galaxy SmartTag 3, which for the first time supports Apple's iOS devices alongside its own Galaxy phones. This expansion aims to broaden the user base for Samsung's tracking tags and directly compete with Apple's AirTag.
The new SmartTag 3 is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, with a 35% reduction in volume and a 33% decrease in weight. It features a rounded design, an aluminum button, and is water and dust resistant with an IP67 rating, making it suitable for attaching to keychains, bags, or pet collars.
Battery life has been significantly improved, with the CR2032 battery expected to last up to 550 days under normal conditions, and up to 790 days in power-saving mode. The device also boasts upgraded connectivity, supporting Bluetooth 6.0 and Channel Sounding technology for improved directional and distance finding up to 60 meters. Ultra-Wideband technology enables centimeter-level precision when locating an item.
Beyond basic tracking, the SmartTag 3 includes features to prevent loss, such as 'Place Notification' which alerts users when an item moves out of a designated area. It also offers motion detection, location history, and alerts if an item is left behind. A lost mode utilizes NFC, allowing anyone who finds the tag to scan it with their smartphone to retrieve the owner's contact information. The built-in button can also control smart home devices via the SmartThings app.
When out of direct range, the SmartTag 3 uses the Galaxy Find network, which leverages over 900 million active devices worldwide for encrypted item location. The Galaxy SmartTag 3 is expected to launch in South Korea within a week, followed by the US and other markets, with an estimated price of around $30 in the US, similar to the previous generation. Pricing and availability in Israel are yet to be determined.
