Ireland Coach Confirms Match Against Israel Amidst Controversy

Ireland national football team coach, Heimir Hallgrímsson, confirmed on Wednesday that the upcoming match against Israel, scheduled for Sunday in Serbia, will proceed as planned. This statement comes amid public controversy surrounding the games between the two nations.

"The Irish FA said we are playing both games and we will play them. That was our intention from the moment we arrived at the camp," Hallgrímsson stated. He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but emphasized the team's focus on the upcoming matches, taking them "day by day."

Ireland is set to play Austria on Thursday before traveling to Serbia for the match against Israel on Sunday. Hallgrímsson addressed concerns about potential protests and the charged atmosphere, asserting his professional focus. "I am focused on football. I will let others think about security. We are playing Austria, and that is enough to make me focus only on football. I will not let background noise affect my concentration," he said.

A significant point of discussion was Irish midfielder Finn Azaz, whose mother is Israeli, and his potential involvement in the upcoming games. Hallgrímsson did not commit to whether Azaz would play against Israel but praised his conduct during this sensitive period. "Finn has shown incredible emotional control and awareness," the coach remarked. "In my opinion, he is probably one of the people I value most for the way he has handled this whole situation. When you are part of a national team, you have to listen to all opinions."
