Ireland Coach Clarifies Stance on Playing Israel Amidst Controversy

Icelandic coach Heimir Hallgrímsson of the Irish national football team has clarified that they will indeed play their second scheduled match against Israel in the Nations League campaign. Hallgrímsson stated, "Maybe I was unclear, we will complete the second game against Israel as well. That's what we intended and that's what we will do." He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, particularly for the players, but emphasized that the decision has been made.

The Irish team is currently focused on their upcoming match against Austria. Hallgrímsson's remarks came during a press conference where the topic of playing Israel was raised again. He stressed a day-by-day approach to their schedule, stating, "We are concentrating on the game against Austria, what happens afterwards... We need to take it day by day. It has already been decided, we will play the upcoming game."

Hallgrímsson also praised an unnamed individual, referred to as "Fin Azaz," for demonstrating "complete emotional control" and being someone he greatly admires. He described this person as a model of teamwork, capable of managing personal emotions while considering all viewpoints within the national team. "To do your job with a complete understanding of all opinions... talking about it, being part of the national team, I have no words to explain to you. You wouldn't even understand what's going on inside. We have a lot of respect within the squad, and it's amazing," Hallgrímsson added.
