Israel's Military Chief Cancels US Trip Amid Heightened Security Alert

The Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, canceled his planned visit to the United States on Wednesday due to the general heightened alert within the IDF and the sensitive security situation. The decision was made before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's remarks on Tuesday.

A senior IDF official explained the move, stating, "It is impossible to put the army on alert and fly abroad." Halevi was scheduled to hold strategic working meetings in Washington with his American counterpart, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

The meetings were intended to focus on close security coordination and a joint response to regional threats in the Middle East. However, the severity of the security developments and the need for senior command presence in Israel led to the cancellation of the trip. An IDF source noted after Netanyahu's statement that while an threat is identified, it does not necessarily mean imminent combat.
