IDF Chief of Staff Cancels US Trip Amid Security Concerns
The Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, has canceled an upcoming visit to the United States due to the prevailing security situation in Israel. The trip, scheduled to take place in about a week and a half, was intended for meetings with the commander of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Discussions were slated to focus on military cooperation, particularly concerning Iran and other regional threats.
Kochavi informed his U.S. hosts that given the heightened security alert across all fronts and the general security situation, he believes it is inappropriate for him to be abroad and manage events remotely. A senior IDF official stated, "It is impossible to put the army on alert and fly abroad." The decision was made prior to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement regarding a "pre-election attack."
