An Israeli citizen, Michael Moshe Mizrahi, 68, was killed in a shooting in Montreal near a kosher restaurant and a Chabad house, while one police officer was also killed and another was seriously wounded. Canadian coverage focused heavily on the gunman's manifesto, which police say reflected an anti-feminist Incel ideology, but authorities said the motive for the attack remains unclear. Mizrahi was initially mistaken by police for a terrorist and shot dead at the scene, apparently by a female officer, after being left critically wounded.
Israel's consulate general in Montreal confirmed to La Presse that the dead civilian was Mizrahi. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs said he was “a beloved member of the Montreal Jewish community,” and offered condolences to his family and friends. After hours of uncertainty and conflicting rumors, his death was confirmed to family members and to the Chabad Meda community, where he belonged. ZAKA said it is working to bring his body to Israel for burial.
The shooting took place in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges district, an area with a large Jewish population, near a supermarket, a kosher restaurant, and a Chabad house. The gunman, whose name was not released, was killed. The fallen officer was identified as Muhammad Lamine Ben Radouane, who had served in the Montreal police since 2021. Police called his death “a great loss” and praised his dedication and professionalism. A second officer was seriously injured.
Police said they responded after a bystander reported hearing gunfire and seeing a rifle barrel protruding from a window. Montreal police chief Fady Dagher said at a later press briefing that the shooter's motive was still unknown. Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Cohen, a Chabad emissary in Montreal, said police evacuated people from nearby hotels into the Chabad building. Witnesses described hearing 10 to 12 shots and seeing parents and children flee in panic from the area, which is usually quiet and family-oriented. The attack happened while Canada is hosting the World Cup alongside the United States and Mexico.
