Ethiopia Conflict Escalates, Causing Civilian Casualties

A fierce conflict in northern Ethiopia has intensified over the past week, transforming the region into a war zone and resulting in civilian deaths and injuries. Government forces are engaged in heavy fighting against the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), with the military advancing rapidly towards Mekelle, the regional capital. Eyewitnesses in one affected city reported bombings that killed residents and injured dozens, with some sustaining severe injuries like blindness or amputations.

The escalation began last week when seven armed groups united to form the "Alliance of Ethiopian Peoples for Survival," vowing to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. This alliance includes Tigrayan and Amharic organizations with a history of conflict, now united by a common goal against the government. While the alliance's declaration was recent, offensive actions had been underway for months, leaving the local population in a state of prolonged uncertainty.

Israel is closely monitoring the situation and is actively working to evacuate its citizens stranded in the affected areas. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it is making "feverish efforts" and maintaining contact with relevant parties to ensure the safety of Israelis in northern Ethiopia.
