Journalist Demands Apology, Damages from Channel 14 Host Over Broadcast

Investigative journalist Ronen Bergman has sent a pre-litigation warning letter to Yinon Magal, host of Channel 14's "HaPatriotim" program. The letter, issued by attorneys Amit Mor and the firm of Ne'eman, Brandes, Amir & Co. with assistance from "Dibah Hamal" (Defamation Task Force), demands Magal cease and desist from broadcasting defamatory content. The dispute stems from a segment where Magal allegedly accused Bergman of revealing details of the "Beepers Operation" before its execution, thereby endangering national security and aiding an enemy during wartime.

Bergman vehemently denies these accusations, labeling them as false and libelous. The letter asserts that Magal attacked Bergman on air, calling his statements "panic-mongering" and "nonsense," and crucially, failed to seek Bergman's response before the broadcast. This is described as part of a sustained smear campaign aimed at damaging Bergman's reputation and journalistic career, according to "Israel Hayom."

Bergman is demanding Magal immediately stop distributing the segment, issue a public apology at the start of the next program, post a written clarification on social media, and pay NIS 50,000 in damages within seven days. Failure to comply will result in Bergman pursuing legal action.

Separately, media personality Nadav Peri recently criticized security agencies' actions against media outlets, tweeting that the Shin Bet and police have become politicized arms of the government, posing a threat to democracy. Magal responded sarcastically to Peri's claims, questioning why security agencies shouldn't condemn a TV channel for censorship and endangering the prime minister, Mossad chief, and military intelligence chief, and why police shouldn't investigate a commentator for breaking the law.
