NBA Clarifies Rules for 2026-27 Season, Affecting Player Movement

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has released four clarifications for referees ahead of the upcoming 2026-27 season, aiming to refine the application of existing rules. These guidelines, presented in two videos, focus on specific types of fouls that impact player movement and spacing on the court.

The clarifications address "push-offs" by offensive players who extend their arms to create separation, stating that while using an outstretched non-dribbling hand for balance is permissible, aggressive pushing is a foul. This rule could potentially affect players like Deni Avdija, who are known for using this technique.

Additionally, the league emphasized rules against using hands to push defenders during screens, particularly in pick-and-roll situations, to prevent defenders from maintaining their position. The NBA also highlighted illegal holding or pulling by the defense, especially away from the ball, which restricts an offensive player's movement.

Finally, the guidelines clarify fouls during drives to the basket, stating that defenders cannot impede an offensive player's path with significant contact. Conversely, offensive players are also prohibited from pushing defenders off their path during drives. The league noted that this fourth point might lead to more foul calls in favor of players like Avdija, who frequently drive to the basket.
