NBA Clarifies Rules for 2026-27 Season, Affecting Player Movement

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has released four clarifications for referees ahead of the 2026-27 season, aiming to refine the application of existing rules. These directives, presented in two video segments, focus on specific types of fouls that have become prevalent in the league.

The clarifications address "push-offs" by offensive players creating space, emphasizing that while using the non-dribbling hand for minor contact is permissible, an aggressive, extended push is now a foul. This could impact players like Deni Avdija, who is noted for his effective use of this technique. Additionally, the league is cracking down on illegal use of hands by screeners in pick-and-rolls, prohibiting them from pushing defenders to impede their ability to guard. Defenders are also being reminded of rules against holding or pulling offensive players, particularly away from the ball, to restrict their movement.

A significant focus is placed on fouls during drives to the basket. The NBA clarified that defenders cannot make contact that significantly alters an offensive player's path to the hoop. Conversely, offensive players are also prohibited from pushing defenders off their path during drives. This specific clarification is expected to benefit players like Avdija, who leads the NBA in drives to the basket, potentially resulting in more foul calls in his favor.
