BYD Dolphin Significantly Enlarged, Gains Fifth Seat for New Model

The BYD Dolphin, a small electric car currently sold in Israel as a four-seater, is set to receive a substantial upgrade with a newly revealed model in China. This updated version is larger, measuring 4.205 meters long and 1.81 meters wide, making it 21.5 cm longer and 9 cm wider than the current Israeli model. The wheelbase has also increased by 15 cm to 2.65 meters, aiming to provide more rear passenger space, though its comfort for three adults remains to be tested.

The new Dolphin also features a redesigned powertrain, moving the electric motor from the front wheels to the rear. This shift creates additional storage space at the front of the vehicle. Structural changes include a multi-link rear suspension and wider tires, which are expected to improve ride comfort and handling, though official testing results are pending.

BYD has not yet announced specifications for battery capacity, range, or charging times, nor has it revealed the capacity of the front storage compartment or the rear trunk. However, registered models indicate a 95 kW (approximately 129 hp) motor, which is more powerful than the base model sold in Israel but less powerful than the top-tier version. The maximum recorded speed is 150 km/h, with registered weights of 1,180 and 1,255 kg, utilizing lithium iron phosphate batteries.

Interior updates include a new two-spoke steering wheel, a larger central touchscreen, and physical buttons. Some versions may be equipped with a laser sensor for driver assistance systems. Details on trim levels and feature availability for markets outside China are still unclear.

This larger size positions the new Dolphin closer to the supermini class, distinguishing it from the current urban-focused model. Its closest competitor in China is the Geely EX2, which shares a similar wheelbase and rear suspension but is slightly shorter. BYD has not confirmed if or when the new Dolphin model will be available in Israel, where the current model sells for approximately NIS 115,000 to NIS 124,000.
