Netanyahu Reportedly Met Libyan Military Commander in UAE
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly met with Saddam Haftar, the deputy commander of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces, during a recent visit to the United Arab Emirates, according to an Italian newspaper report. Haftar's plane landed in Abu Dhabi shortly after Netanyahu's arrival. A post by an associate of Haftar on X indicated the meeting was to secure Netanyahu's support for Haftar's presidential ambitions in Libya.
This is not the first reported clandestine meeting between Haftar and Israeli officials. In 2021, Haaretz newspaper reported that one of Haftar's planes was seen at Ben Gurion Airport, allegedly for a meeting with Mossad agents. Haftar was identified in 2022 as a member of a Libyan-Spanish terror cell accused of unlawful killings, torture, rape, sexual violence, and forced displacement.
The Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano suggested the meeting with Netanyahu may have aimed to re-establish Haftar's legitimacy with the United States. The report also mentioned that Netanyahu had asked UAE's Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to deny a prior warning he had issued before October 7th, and that Netanyahu's flight to the Emirates was delayed at the last minute, with his wife joining him.
