Israel Security Officials Warn of Broad Gaza Operation Amid Hamas Resurgence

Israeli security officials are increasingly concerned about Hamas's efforts to reassert control and governance in the Gaza Strip, leading to assessments that a wide-scale military operation in the Palestinian enclave may become unavoidable. According to reports, Hamas is employing tactics such as establishing checkpoints and organizing mass funerals to regain influence over the population.

Security sources indicate that Hamas is deliberately provoking Israel with what they term "small violations" in an attempt to derail the current understandings between the two sides. The organization's objective, these sources claim, is to elicit a severe Israeli response that would lead to the collapse of the agreement, with Hamas then blaming Israel for the breakdown.

In parallel with these tensions, the IDF's Southern Command has continued its targeted assassinations of Hamas commanders. Over the past six weeks, more than 60 Hamas operatives have been eliminated, including the head of Hamas's financial directorate. This individual managed a network of money changers in Turkey, facilitating the transfer of an estimated one billion shekels into Gaza. This money, reportedly sourced from Iran, was allegedly used for armament, recruitment, and weapons production. Another operative involved in transferring funds into Gaza was killed on the day of the report.

A Southern Command official stated that the message to Hamas leadership is clear: "The activity will continue as long as necessary. Anyone who had a part in planning and executing terrorist activity against Israel knows they are becoming a target. We continue to act decisively and consistently against anyone who intends to harm the State of Israel."

Officials believe that if focused pressure does not yield a change in Hamas's behavior, a broad military operation will be the only remaining option.
