Israel Security Forces Signal Broad Gaza Operation Amid Hamas Efforts

Israeli security officials are increasingly concerned about Hamas's attempts to reassert its control and governance in the Gaza Strip, leading to the assessment that a wide-scale military operation in the Palestinian enclave may become unavoidable. These concerns stem from Hamas actions such as establishing checkpoints and organizing mass funerals, which officials view as efforts to regain legitimacy among the population.

Sources within the security establishment indicate that Hamas is deliberately provoking Israel with what they term 'minor violations' in an effort to destabilize the current agreement and shift blame for any escalation onto Israel. This strategy aims to elicit a strong Israeli response that would lead to the collapse of the existing arrangements.

In parallel with these tensions, the IDF's Southern Command has continued its targeted assassinations of Hamas commanders. Over the past six weeks, more than 60 commanders have been eliminated, including Hamas's finance chief. This individual managed a network of money exchangers in Turkey, facilitating the transfer of an estimated one billion shekels into Gaza. This money was reportedly used for armament, recruitment, and weapons production.

Another operative responsible for transferring funds into Gaza was killed on the day of the report. A Southern Command official stated that the message to Hamas leadership is clear: "The activity will continue as long as necessary. Anyone who had a part in planning and executing terrorist activity against Israel knows they are becoming a target. We continue to act decisively and consistently against anyone who intends to harm the State of Israel."

Officials believe that if these focused pressures do not yield a change in Hamas's behavior, a broader military operation will be the only remaining option.
