American Airlines Automates Seat Selection for Loyalty Members
American Airlines has launched a new feature within its mobile app that automatically assigns passengers to their preferred seat types, such as window or aisle, if one becomes available. The service, available to members of the AAdvantage loyalty program, allows users to specify their desired seat location. The system continuously monitors the aircraft's seating map and, upon finding a suitable vacant seat, will automatically move the passenger and send them a notification. This feature operates up to 24 hours before departure and is currently limited to solo travelers who have already been assigned a seat. Seat changes are confined to the originally booked cabin class and do not incur additional fees. The airline will not move a passenger to a more expensive seat, even if it becomes available and matches their preference, thereby preserving its ability to sell premium seats. This development stems from American Airlines' ADEPT program, which trains entry-level employees in technology and engineering. A team within this program identified the common passenger frustration of repeatedly checking seat maps for better options and transformed it into an automated background process, incorporating AI tools to streamline development.
Israeli travelers can utilize this new service on eligible American Airlines flights within the U.S. or on other international routes, provided they are AAdvantage members, traveling alone, and have an assigned seat. Eligibility is based on these criteria, not nationality. While the service is available now for eligible Israelis on non-Israel flights, they will have to wait for American Airlines' planned return to Tel Aviv in late March 2027, as the airline currently does not operate direct flights to Ben Gurion Airport.
