Shuli Rand Defends Gender-Segregated Concerts Amidst Online Backlash

Israeli singer and actor Shuli Rand is facing criticism on social media for his decision to hold gender-segregated concerts in Jerusalem on October 6th. The shows, which will accommodate 3,104 men in the evening and 3,104 women later, are intended to cater to a religious audience that may find it difficult to attend his regular, mixed-gender performances. Rand stated that these segregated events are held about once a year and that he is "not committing any sin" and is "very comfortable with my decision."

Rand explained that he wants to provide an equal opportunity for everyone to attend his performances, emphasizing that "true peace is when each side understands that the other side has its own needs and rules." He also noted that these specific concerts are for a more dedicated audience familiar with his deeper repertoire beyond standard religious music, often leading to engaging discussions with attendees like yeshiva students.

Despite the backlash from some fans who expressed disappointment over the move away from mixed-audience shows, Rand aims to calm the situation. He asserted his commitment to continuing his regular, mixed-gender concerts and expressed his love for all his fans, believing that division is not what is needed. He also highlighted that women deserve to see a performance and that he wishes to perform for everyone.

This controversy comes as Rand's new film, "The Clown" (Ha'Bathan), garners significant attention after its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, with international distribution rights already sold. The film is expected to be released locally soon. Rand also recently had a sold-out performance in Caesarea, and his double-header in Jerusalem is scheduled to take place at the historic Binyanei Ha'Uma venue.

Rand, who underwent a religious transformation and joined the Breslov Hasidic movement in 1998, reflected on his current happiness, including his second marriage to Tzipi Grant. He stated, "I am happy with my lot, thank God and without the evil eye. I specialized in accepting difficult days, and now I am learning how to accept the good days, and to enjoy all the simple and beautiful things in life."
