UK Foreign Secretary Announces Sanctions on Israeli Settlements

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband declared that the UK government will impose sanctions on Israeli settlements, aiming to halt the involvement of British companies in their development and support. Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Miliband stated that the UK condemns actions by extremists in the West Bank and military operations in Gaza, also deeming the occupation of Palestine illegal. He emphasized that sanctions against Israelis living beyond the "green line" have already helped mobilize the international community.

Miliband described the suffering inflicted upon Palestinians as a "stain on the conscience of the world," expressing a personal sense of responsibility as a descendant of Holocaust survivors. He indicated that the government under Prime Minister Andy Burnham has revised its approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While condemning attacks by Hezbollah and Hamas and acknowledging Israel's security threats, Miliband asserted that the events of 2023 do not justify the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Foreign Secretary also addressed Iran, pledging to use economic sanctions to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, combat regional proxy forces, and secure the Strait of Hormuz. He concluded by affirming the enduring solidarity between the British people and peace advocates in Israel and Palestine.
