Tirat Carmel Schools Shift to Five-Day Week for Older Students

Starting October 4, 2026, all junior high and high schools in Tirat Carmel will transition to a five-day school week, running from Sunday to Thursday. This change affects students in grades 7 through 12 across the city's three post-elementary schools: Drora Shipman, Drora Ariel, and Drora Arts and Sciences. Elementary schools will maintain their current schedules. The shift, implemented after the Sukkot holiday, aims to reorganize the school week without reducing overall study hours, ensuring pedagogical continuity and quality of instruction. Fridays will be dedicated to enrichment activities, social engagement, academic support, youth movements, sports, culture, and family time.

The decision follows extensive planning and coordination with the Ministry of Education, teacher unions, the parent leadership, and school administrations. Mayor Dudu Cohen stated that the move provides students with a more tailored and quality learning framework, alongside opportunities for social and personal activities. He thanked all involved parties for their partnership.

Danny Passler, Director of the Education Department, added that the change was developed through a professional assessment of the needs of schools, students, and staff. Preparations include adjusting schedules and maintaining the pedagogical continuum. The department will continue to support schools, staff, students, and parents throughout the implementation and monitor the new format.
