Settler Outposts Surround Palestinian Village, Displacing Residents

Seven Israeli settler outposts now encircle the Palestinian village of Burqa, consuming thousands of dunams of land and targeting the olive harvest, according to the village council head, Sayel Kanaan. Kanaan described the situation as a "series of organized displacement," noting that four new outposts have been established since October 7, in addition to two or three pre-existing ones. Burqa is now accessible through only one entrance, leading to the town of Deir Dibwan, raising fears that its closure would effectively turn the village into a "remote prison."

Recent weeks have seen repeated attacks on Burqa, including assaults on farmers and homes, the burning of agricultural land, and damage to vehicles, according to Palestinian reports. The olive trees, a vital source of income for many residents, have been cut, burned, and damaged. Kanaan stated that most of the village's land has been confiscated, with settler outposts controlling other areas. Residents now cultivate only about 500 dunams out of the village's original 14,000 dunams.

Attacks have also targeted homes on the village outskirts. Kanaan recounted the experience of a resident who returned from the United States to live in his home, only for it and his car to be attacked. The resident was forced to rent an apartment in Ramallah and enroll his children in schools outside the area, only returning home when necessary. Settlers have also dumped waste in the village streets and gardens, increasing service costs for residents.

Kanaan warned that continued attacks could lead to an escalation, noting that residents in remote areas have limited resources. He stated that Palestinians face difficult choices due to settler violence, land confiscation, and limited options for relocation. Despite the challenges, Burqa's residents are committed to staying, but Kanaan cautioned that ongoing attacks might compel them to defend themselves and their property.
