TikTok Video Threatens to Derail Arab Leader's Supreme Court Bid

A TikTok video posted by Balad party chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh on October 10, 2023, three days after the Hamas attack, has emerged and could jeopardize his candidacy for the Knesset. The video, revealed on Kan News's "Ha'Boker Ha'Ze" program, shows Abu Shehadeh refraining from naming Hamas as the perpetrator or condemning the massacre. Instead, he accused Israel of "barbaric incitement" and murdering Palestinians in Gaza, Jerusalem, and the West Bank.

In the video, Abu Shehadeh reiterated statements from an article for which he was previously disqualified, calling the Palestinian issue a "significant strategic political event that is still in its infancy" with "major political implications for the Palestinian issue and the entire region." He expressed solidarity with "martyrs, the wounded, and all innocent victims' families, especially our people in the Negev," without directly referencing the killings, kidnappings, or harm to civilians and security forces.

Furthermore, Abu Shehadeh criticized Israeli leadership, alleging "racist incitement to commit genocide, ethnic cleansing, and cutting off electricity and water," alongside threats against Palestinians in "historic and mixed cities." This revelation is expected to play a crucial role in the Supreme Court hearing on Thursday concerning his disqualification. It challenges his claim of not being aware of the event's scope at the time and strengthens the assessment of senior legal officials that his disqualification will be upheld.
