Ireland Soccer Team Refuses Handshake With Israel, Bows During Anthem

Players from the Irish national soccer team engaged in several unsportsmanlike actions before their match against Israel, protesting the war in Gaza. Instead of shaking hands with their Israeli counterparts before kickoff, the Irish players refused the customary gesture. Additionally, they bowed their heads during the playing of Israel's national anthem, "Hatikvah," while substitute players turned their backs to the field.

Further demonstrations included the Irish team not participating in the traditional flag exchange ceremony and abstaining from a joint team photograph. Player Jack Byrne scored Ireland's third goal in the 24th minute and subsequently kissed a black armband worn by the team in memory of war victims, then kissed the team crest on his jersey.

The Irish team had previously announced several planned provocations. Beyond the handshake snub, players wore black armbands and pledged to donate their match fees, approximately 2,000 euros per player, to humanitarian charities. The match proceeded after significant pressure on the Irish team not to boycott it entirely, with reports indicating a strong public sentiment in Ireland against Israel's actions in Gaza.

Earlier, goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was removed from the squad after stating he did not wish to participate due to his moral objections to the events in Gaza. The pre-match chaos also saw the Irish team's press conference and training session postponed at short notice before they ultimately confirmed their participation in the game.
