Israel and Ireland Soccer Teams to Forego Handshakes

The Israeli and Irish national soccer teams will not shake hands before their upcoming UEFA Nations League match, following an agreement brokered by UEFA. This decision stems from the Irish team's intention to make gestures in support of Palestine during the game. Consequently, the Israeli Football Association requested and received approval for the mutual non-handshake protocol.

Instead of the customary handshakes, the players are expected to move to opposite sides of the field after the national anthems are played. This arrangement avoids any physical contact between the opposing players before the match begins.

The Irish Football Association had previously announced that their team would undertake several 'gestures' directed at Israel and in favor of Palestine. This preemptive move by the Irish side led to the agreement to forgo handshakes, a decision that has been finalized by UEFA.
