Israeli Triathlete Denied Competition Gear Featuring National Flag

Israeli Olympic triathlete Shachar Sagiv, 31, finished 31st in the Grand Final World Championship series event in Pontevedra, Spain, on Sunday. The competition, which included 65 athletes, featured a 1500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride, and 10-kilometer run.

Sagiv was reportedly not permitted to wear his official Israeli competition attire, which displays the Israeli flag and the word "ISRAEL." The event was held under heavy security due to expressions of hatred towards Israel present at the venue.

Sagiv experienced a difficult start in the swim portion. He managed to close gaps during the cycling leg, joining the second group, about 40 seconds behind the leaders, which included Olympic gold and silver medalists from Paris 2024. During the run, he suffered from hamstring cramps after the first lap, forcing him to stop, stretch, and recover. He improved his position in the second lap after the cramps subsided.

"This is not the result I wanted to achieve," Sagiv stated after the race. He attributed his performance to a three-month training layoff due to a leg injury, which he believes has prevented him from returning to peak competitive form. Sagiv expressed confidence that each upcoming race will help him regain his best performance, with three more competitions scheduled before the season concludes.
