Ireland Football Team Proceeds With Match Against Israel Amidst Boycott Calls

The Israeli and Irish national football teams are set to play in Hungary as part of the Nations League, despite calls within Ireland to boycott the match. The Irish Football Association announced on Sunday that the game would proceed as planned, countering a campaign aimed at pressuring Irish players not to participate. Reports indicate that reserve goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu informed the team's coaches of his decision to boycott, with the possibility of others joining him.

"Yesterday a player expressed his discomfort with participating in the game, after which there were another four hours of discussions between the players, the coaching staff, and the association heads, and we heard many positions," said [Irish coach John] O'Shea at a press conference. "In the last hour and a half, we held a vote among the squad on whether to play, and there is a large majority that requested to continue, therefore the association made the decision that the game will be played, as was our initial intention."

Israeli national team coach Ran Ben Shimon commented on the Irish team's decision, stating, "My hand will be open to anyone who wants to shake it. My players know how to deal with pressure amazingly."

The attempt to cancel the match is seen as another point of tension in relations between the two countries, stemming from Irish public opinion regarding Israel and its policies during the war in Gaza. Earlier in the month, Irish broadcaster RTÉ announced that Ireland would not participate in or broadcast the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, citing concerns over the lack of independent access for international journalists to Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there.

The match between Ireland and Israel will be held at a neutral venue and without spectators.
