New Dolphin-Class Submarine 'Dragon' Arrives in Israel
The Israeli Navy's newest submarine, INS 'Dragon', arrived at the Haifa naval base on Monday, concluding a defense cooperation project with Germany that began in the late 1980s. The 'Dragon' is the sixth submarine in Israel's fleet and the third and final vessel in the 'Dolphin' class. It features a unique design and an air-independent propulsion system, allowing for extended underwater operations.
The submarine journeyed from Germany to Israel over several weeks, submerged for much of the voyage. During the trip, the crew passed over the site where the INS 'Dakar' sank and held a memorial ceremony for the 69 crew members lost. Lieutenant Colonel A., head of the submarine department, noted the symbolic connection to the fallen, even in the 'Dragon's' name.
To accommodate the new submarine, the Israeli Navy and Haifa base underwent significant infrastructure upgrades, including widening berths and integrating advanced technological systems. The 'Dragon' is now undergoing a rapid operationalization process, known as 'Operation Fast', to integrate it into the operational capabilities of Submarine Flotilla 7 within weeks.
