Netherlands Intensifies Scrutiny of Israeli Travelers' Luggage Over Settlement Goods

New regulations in the Netherlands have led to intensified baggage checks for travelers arriving from Israel, with potential confiscation of goods and even legal repercussions for violations. Israeli tourists are reporting increased scrutiny at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, where customs officials are questioning passengers about the origin of items in their luggage, including souvenirs, gifts, and personal-use products.

The stricter measures, which took effect on September 22, stem from a Dutch ordinance prohibiting the import, purchase, and sale of goods produced in Israeli settlements located in the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and East Jerusalem. These restrictions now extend to items carried by individuals in their personal baggage, not just commercial shipments.

Customs authorities are empowered to request documentation proving the origin of goods. If prohibited items are found, they can be seized, and a formal report filed. The Dutch Public Prosecution Service will then decide on further action, which could range from fines to criminal prosecution.

Travelers have described being singled out after arriving from Tel Aviv, with specific attention paid to products like wine, dates, and olives, which could fall under the new restrictions. While one customs representative suggested these were routine checks on intercontinental flights, some passengers, like Sivan Behar, assert that flights from Israel are subject to special, heightened scrutiny.

Amidst these developments, Jewish community representatives and pro-Israel organizations are exploring legal challenges to the new rules, deeming them discriminatory. The Netherlands joins a growing number of countries adopting stricter policies regarding products from Israeli settlements, with twelve other nations having recently announced intentions to implement or support European trade restrictions.
