Former Coca-Cola CEO Reveals Secrets of Iconic Soda Formula

Tal Raban, former CEO of Coca-Cola Israel, has shared details about the company's famously secret formula on his Instagram page. Raban explained that the "secret formula" actually refers to a component making up about 1% of the drink, yet responsible for its distinctive taste and aroma. This mixture, known as "7X," comprises seven ingredients, including essential oils like orange and lemon, as well as cinnamon.

According to Raban, only a limited number of Coca-Cola plants globally are authorized to produce this secret essence, with the factory supplying Israel located in Ireland. Addressing the common question about cocaine in Coca-Cola, Raban stated that the drink originally contained trace amounts from coca leaves, but this was removed in 1929.

He suggested a simple experiment involving cinnamon sprinkled on lemon to demonstrate some of the drink's flavors, implying lemon and cinnamon are key components of the 7X mixture. While the precise formula is kept in a vault in Atlanta, known only to a select few, the main ingredients like water, sugar or sweeteners, carbon dioxide, caramel coloring, and flavor extracts are not secret.

These extracts include processed coca leaves (with cocaine removed), kola nut extract, and essential oils. Experts suggest the secrecy surrounding the formula is largely a successful marketing strategy, as basic components can be identified through chemical analysis. In Israel, a notable story recounts Rabbi Tuvia Gefen from the US obtaining the ingredient list about 60 years ago to certify the drink's kosher status, including for Passover, making him one of the few rabbis privy to the exact ingredients.
