Arab Doctors' Association to Sue Over False Accusations of Patient Harm

Dr. Naim Abu Freih, head of the Arab Doctors Association in the Negev, announced on Sunday that legal action will be taken against recent statements accusing Arab doctors and nurses of harming patients. Abu Freih described these accusations as "nonsense" and unfounded, warning of their dangerous potential to damage the relationship between medical staff and the public.

The association has been in contact with the Israeli Medical Association and other relevant authorities to explore legal avenues. Abu Freih stated that these accusations are not isolated incidents, as similar claims have been made repeatedly by different individuals on the same platform, increasing their severity and impact on Arab medical professionals. The association is committed to addressing these claims beyond mere populist rhetoric, emphasizing the risk of solidifying negative perceptions of Arab doctors among patients and their families.

Following the association's outreach, the Israeli Medical Association has initiated its own steps, including a letter from its chairman to the Health Minister and Prime Minister, and is examining legal options. Abu Freih highlighted that such incitement can spill over into the work environment, potentially making Arab medical staff more vulnerable to anxiety, scrutiny, or recording by patients or their families. Despite these pressures, he affirmed that Arab medical teams continue to provide professional and humane care to all patients, noting their significant role in hospitals since the war's outset.

Abu Freih recalled a similar situation in December 2023, where he called for accountability for a rabbi who accused Arab medical staff of killing Jewish patients, warning then of potential violence and psychological distress. He stressed that ongoing inflammatory rhetoric creates fear and anxiety within the healthcare system, leading to increased caution in daily interactions. While this does not imply a retreat from duty, it adds pressure to an already sensitive work environment. The association plans to continue coordinating with the Medical Association and legal bodies to determine judicial steps against the individual and platform responsible for spreading the accusations, while Arab medical teams are urged to maintain their professional standards alongside legal challenges.
