Iran Awaits Official US Response to Strait of Hormuz Peace Proposal After Trump Rejection

Iran announced Sunday that it is still awaiting an official response from the United States regarding its proposal for a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, despite President Donald Trump publicly stating he had rejected the plan. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the IRNA news agency that Tehran is aware of Trump's "initial reaction" but has not yet received a formal reply through intermediaries. He stated that Iran will decide on its next steps after Washington's final position is conveyed.

Trump said on Saturday that he had rejected the Iranian proposal, asserting that Tehran seeks an agreement because its situation is worsening and that the proposed framework "will not be acceptable." Iran presented a seven-day plan on Friday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The proposal stipulated that the U.S. would lift the naval blockade on Iranian ports, ease restrictions on Iranian oil exports, and release frozen Iranian funds.

In return, Iran was expected to work towards opening the Strait of Hormuz and engage in broader negotiations with Washington. Araghchi reiterated that Tehran's conditions for opening the strait remain unchanged and that a mutually agreed-upon solution is the only way to end the stalemate. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, has seen reduced traffic in recent months due to the ongoing conflict and attacks on vessels in the region. The conflict between the U.S. and Israel and Iran began in late February and has seen intermittent lulls and renewed attacks since then. Disruptions to oil exports from the Persian Gulf have contributed to rising global energy prices.
