Lior Kalfon Confronts Stage Fright for New Solo Show

Israeli performer Lior Kalfon, known for the wordless musical "Wow!", is set to debut a new solo comedy show after overcoming a debilitating fear of performing. Kalfon, who has been in the entertainment industry for 40 years, realized his long-held dream of a solo act was hindered by stage fright, a condition he researched extensively for a year. He describes the fear as subconscious, surfacing after a prolonged break from acting.

The new show, described as "physical comedy" rather than traditional stand-up, will incorporate 1990s-style nonsense, wordplay, and Kalfon's own quirky inventions, such as a device to dry and reuse tea bags. He aims to blend the humor of his past work with new material, creating a "crazy evening" for audiences.

Kalfon's journey back to the stage was influenced by significant life events, including the October 7th attacks, which prompted him to perform for evacuees and hospital patients. He also reflects on a near-fatal experience during his severe COVID-19 hospitalization in 2020, which intensified his desire to create and share his art. This near-death experience, he states, gave him a sense of mission to spread joy and creativity.

Alongside the new show, Kalfon is celebrating the 20th anniversary of "Wow!" with a tour across Israel. He also recently launched "The Red Microphone," an online course on Amazon aimed at helping others overcome public speaking anxiety. Kalfon's career began in his youth, influenced by performers like Mr. Bean and Hanoch Rosen, and his "Wow!" show, inspired by the idea of universal communication through non-verbal means, became a global success.

Kalfon also discussed the impact of international criticism on Israel following the October 7th events, noting that it led to cancellations of "Wow!" performances abroad. He expressed gratitude for a producer in Cancun who embraced the show purely for its artistic merit, connecting people through music and humor without regard for politics. Looking ahead, Kalfon plans to direct a silent film for Netflix, aiming to bring his unique storytelling to a new medium.
