Israeli Opposition Leaders Meet, Sparking Political Reactions

Leaders of the "Change Bloc" in Israeli politics convened on Saturday evening at the Tel Aviv home of Opposition Leader Yair Lapid. The meeting, attended by five key figures, resulted in a joint principles document outlining their future conduct. The gathering drew immediate responses from across the political spectrum.

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett expressed optimism following the meeting, tweeting that he was "filled with hope" and confident in their ability to win 63 Knesset seats and "fix Israel." He emphasized that all participants understood the significance of the moment and set aside personal considerations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the meeting by sharing an AI-generated image that superimposed Knesset members Mansour Abbas and Ahmad Tibi onto a photo of opposition leaders. Meanwhile, Bezalel Smotrich, chairman of the Religious Zionism party, called the meeting "dangerous" on social media. The Yisrael Beiteinu party responded to Smotrich's comment with a video, stating they were "not impressed that you are the person who tends to identify dangers."

A statement from the Likud party asserted that a decision would not be made by a government led by Yair Golan and Gadi Eisenkot, urging those who identify as right-wing to join a broad right-wing government rather than forming one with those who allegedly define Israel as "killing babies as a hobby."

Conversely, Knesset member Naama Lazimi offered strong support for the meeting, congratulating the leaders of the "Camp of Hope" parties for their important gathering and joint signing of the understanding document.
