Ahead of the annual pilgrimage to Uman, Ukraine, for Rosh Hashanah, Israeli reporter Yossi Avdo investigated how yeshiva students classified as draft dodgers successfully pass through Ben Gurion Airport's border control without being apprehended. The phenomenon, which baffles the Haredi community, sees numerous individuals evading military service by traveling to the gravesite of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.

Interviews conducted at the airport revealed a spectrum of beliefs among the travelers. Many expressed unwavering faith in divine providence, believing that "the Creator alone is watching over us" and that the "Tzadik" (righteous one, referring to Rabbi Nachman) orchestrates their safe passage. Some felt they were doing nothing themselves, attributing their successful journeys to supernatural intervention that bypasses authorities.

Beyond mystical explanations, more pragmatic and humorous theories were offered. Several travelers confidently asserted that airport and military officials are hesitant to confront the large groups of Breslov followers, whose "intimidating appearance" deters security personnel. This perception suggests a psychological deterrent at play, where the sheer number and perceived demeanor of the pilgrims discourage intervention.

The pilgrims' confidence is further bolstered by Rabbi Nachman's purported promise to draw his followers away from hell. This belief system reinforces their conviction that no security check or border control can impede those who feel guided by the Tzadik, allowing them to proceed with their journey amidst fervent singing and dancing.
