IDF Halts Use of 'Bat' Drones After Fatal Explosions
The Israeli military has temporarily grounded its 'Bat' model drones, manufactured by the IDF and Ministry of Defense, following a series of incidents where the drones exploded during handling of unexploded ordnance. The drone's explosive payload utilizes a percussion mechanism, making it susceptible to detonation from shaking or movement. In the past year, seven 'Bat' drones failed to detonate and were classified as duds, while three others exploded during inspection. These included incidents in February 2025 involving a bomb disposal unit, July 2025 with another bomb disposal team, and an August 2025 event where a dud drone exploded near Lebanese army soldiers in southern Lebanon.
Following these occurrences, the Yahalom unit, an elite bomb disposal and combat engineering force, issued new directives to soldiers operating the drones. These instructions emphasize avoiding any movement of 'Bat' drones and contacting bomb disposal teams immediately if a dud is encountered, warning against approaching or moving such devices.
This directive comes after two reservist soldiers, Master Sergeant Nadav Kali and Master Sergeant Ofek Moalem, were killed in Gaza two days prior due to the explosion of an IDF drone. An initial military investigation suggests the soldiers were operating two armed drones. While the first mission was successful, the second drone crashed within their northern Gaza base for reasons still under investigation. The soldiers approached the downed drone, likely touching it, which triggered an explosion that critically wounded them. They received field treatment and were later pronounced dead at Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon.
The military confirmed the drone was standard issue and the mission was pre-approved. The IDF has suspended the use of all dropping or explosive-laden drones for 48 hours. Current assessments indicate the drone's failure was not due to Hamas electronic warfare or jamming capabilities. The IDF uses 'Bat' drones as kamikaze or explosive-dropping platforms.
In response to the fatal incident, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has ordered the formation of an expert team to investigate the circumstances, to be headed by a Brigadier General from the Ground Forces.
